Local craft beer & real ale
From St Austell in Cornwall to Bristol's restless craft scene, the South West pairs proud cask brewers with some of Britain's most exciting new beer. Meet them, then follow them to the festivals.
The South West England brewing scene
The South West brews at both ends of the spectrum. St Austell has poured Cornish ale since 1851, its Tribute and Proper Job are West Country staples, and Bath Ales and Dartmoor keep the cask tradition strong. Then there is Bristol, one of the best beer cities in the country, where Bristol Beer Factory, Wiper and True, Lost and Grounded, Moor and Left Handed Giant have built a scene people travel for.
Out west, Verdant in Falmouth turned Cornwall into a haze destination, and Wild Beer in Somerset made its name on wild and barrel-aged styles. Most of these breweries open their own taproom, the region makes a brilliant brewery trail, and the same names pour at its festivals, so a favourite brewery is a short step from a weekend away.

Bath
Abbey Ales is a small, independent brewery based in Bath, Somerset, founded in 1997 by Alan Morgan — the first brewery in the city for over fifty years. They brew traditional English ales in small batches using high-quality ingredients (like Maris Otter malt from Warminster and English hops), and their flagship beer is the golden, hoppy “Bellringer” best bitter.

Arbor Ales, established in Bristol in 2007, has been a key player in the city's craft beer scene, offering a diverse range of beers in their signature 568ml pint-sized cans. Their lineup includes pale ales, IPAs, gluten-free options, lagers, stouts, and mixed cases. We believe that without raw materials of exceptional quality it is impossible to produce first-rate beers. This is why we go to great efforts to source the best malted barley from around the UK and spend the hop harvest every year picking out the finest grown hops for our Ales. We have a staple of distinctive regular beers and also introduce seasonal and special ales throughout the year.

Badger Beers' Outland range is a characterful collection of craft beers inspired by diverse landscapes, offering unique flavors and styles. The lineup includes the Outland Hazy IPA, a light and hazy pale ale with bold citrus and tropical notes; the Outland Ginger Pale Ale, a sweet and spicy hazy ale; the Outland West Coast IPA, a classic hoppy brew available on draught; the Outland India Pale Lager, a hybrid combining lager refreshment with IPA's pine and citrus flavors; and the Outland Milk Stout, a silky-smooth stout with sweet undertones. Launched in April 2023, the Outland range has garnered accolades, including a Gold medal and Country Winner title for the Outland Ginger Pale Ale at the World Beer Awards 2024, and recognition for design excellence.
